You Do Not Yield — What That Means in the Everyday

There’s a quote from Empire of Storms by Sarah J. Maas that stays with me:

“You do not yield.”

It’s short. Fierce. But it carries a weight that lingers long after the book is closed. Aelin whispers it to herself when everything is on the line — when the darkness presses in and the fight feels unwinnable. It’s not about brute strength. It’s not about grand heroics. It’s about choosing to rise again, even when rising looks like simply breathing through another hard moment.

Lately, that line has echoed through my own days — quiet reminders tucked between early mornings with the baby, the whirr of the old Singer machine, and the slow rhythm of daily life. Some days, I feel strong and grounded. Other days, I feel frayed at the edges, unsure, and bone tired. But through it all, I keep coming back to this: you do not yield.

It looks different for each of us.

For me, it’s finishing a bag one careful stitch at a time, even if it takes longer than I planned.

It’s making nourishing food for my family when I’d rather lie on the couch.

It’s holding space for my toddler’s big feelings when I feel stretched thin.

It’s choosing to show up to this little business with heart and honesty, even on quiet weeks.

It’s remembering that slowness is not weakness — that rest and resistance can coexist.

Yielding would be giving in to the voice that says “it’s too hard.”

Not yielding is letting that voice speak… and moving forward anyway.

So if you’re in a season where everything feels heavier than usual, I hope this reminds you:

You don’t have to do it all at once.

You don’t have to get it perfect.

You just have to keep showing up.

That’s what not yielding looks like.

It’s small. It’s sacred. It’s strong in the softest way.

With love,

Sarina
